Pilgrims around the Kaaba at Masjid al-Haram in Makkah

Umrah from the UK: The Pilgrim's Mobile Data Guide (2026)

Quick answer: For a UK pilgrim, Saudi Arabia sits in most networks' "rest of world" roaming zone, which means a daily pass or per-megabyte charge on every phone in the family for every day of a ten-to-fourteen-day Umrah. A Saudi Arabia travel eSIM installed at home on Wi-Fi is usually the cheaper and more predictable option: it is working before you reach passport control at Jeddah or Madinah, needs no queue or registration, and leaves your UK SIM live for banking OTPs. Nusuk services have a no-data arrangement with Saudi providers; maps, the group WhatsApp, translation and bookings all still need an allowance.

Disclosure: GulfData sells prepaid travel eSIMs for Saudi Arabia. This is a connectivity guide, not visa, permit, safety or religious guidance. Use the Saudi Ministry of Hajj and Umrah and Nusuk for current official requirements.

The short version:

  • UK roaming to Saudi Arabia bills per line, per day. Multiply the daily pass by the days away, then by the phones in the family, and the number stops being small.
  • Two peaks, two different crowds. Ramadan and the December school holidays are when UK groups travel, and when the networks around the Harams are busiest.
  • Nusuk is separate from your data plan. No eSIM is mandated; the no-data arrangement covers Nusuk services only.
  • Keep the UK SIM for OTPs, with data roaming switched off on that line, and let the eSIM carry everything else.
  • Buy and install at home. Travel eSIM websites and apps are not reliably reachable from inside some Gulf markets.

Pilgrims around the Kaaba at Masjid al-Haram in Makkah

When UK pilgrims travel, and why data matters more than it used to

Two peaks dominate the UK Umrah calendar: the last ten nights of Ramadan, and the December school holidays, when families can go without taking children out of school. Both are busy seasons in Makkah and Madinah, and both involve the same modern dependency: a group leader running the trip from WhatsApp, a hotel booked on an app, permits in Nusuk, a taxi hailed from the phone, and a family back in Birmingham or Bradford expecting a video call every evening.

None of that is a problem in itself. It becomes one when the phone doing all of it is roaming at rest-of-world rates, or when the person holding the group's only working data walks into a crowd and loses signal.

What your UK network charges in Saudi Arabia

Most UK operators place Saudi Arabia outside their inclusive-roaming zones, in a "rest of world" tier. Roaming there is sold as a daily pass covering a set allowance, or charged per megabyte if you have not opted into a pass. Some networks require you to switch roaming on for that zone; some cap spending unless you lift the cap; most bill by calendar day, so a phone that touches data at 23:50 and again at 00:10 has paid for two days.

We deliberately don't publish operator prices here, because they change with promotions and would be out of date within weeks. What doesn't change is the structure, and the structure is per line, per day. A family of five on a twelve-day trip is sixty charged days before anyone has opened a map. Check your own network's rest-of-world terms in its app before you fly, and check them for every handset in the group, not just yours.

The three ways to get data in Makkah and Madinah

Option Ready when you land? ID and queue Keeps your UK number Usually the better call for
UK operator roaming Yes, automatically None Yes A very short trip, one phone, light use
Saudi visitor SIM at JED or MED After the counter Passport; registration is required; peak-season queues Only on a dual-SIM handset Long stays, or anyone who needs a Saudi number
Travel eSIM installed at home Yes, if installed before departure None Yes Most UK pilgrims, and every family group

The visitor SIM is a good product if you want a Saudi number. The catch is the moment you buy it: after a long flight, with a tired family, in a queue that grows with the season. The major operators have counters in arrivals; bring your passport. If all you need is data, the eSIM moves that whole job to your sofa the week before.

Nusuk: what does and doesn't need data

Nusuk is the Saudi Ministry of Hajj and Umrah's official platform and app for permits and the Nusuk Card. In May 2026 the Ministry announced that Nusuk services could be accessed without consuming mobile data, in cooperation with Saudi telecom providers. That is welcome, and it is narrower than it sounds: it covers Nusuk services, it was arranged with Saudi providers, and you should not assume it applies identically to a UK roaming line or every travel eSIM.

Nothing is mandated. No eSIM or SIM is required for pilgrims, and any combination of roaming, a visitor SIM or a travel eSIM is fine. Everything other than Nusuk — maps, WhatsApp, translation, ride-hailing, hotel and train bookings — still needs data. Screenshot your permit and Nusuk Card regardless, so they open with no signal. Our Nusuk App and eSIM: What Pilgrims Actually Need (2026) goes through the announcement and the "free Umrah eSIM" offers in detail.

Arriving at Jeddah or Madinah

A traveller walking through a modern airport terminal

Most UK groups land at Jeddah (JED) for Makkah or at Madinah (MED), the main Umrah gateway for the Prophet's city. Madinah has a single passenger terminal, pilgrim welcome services operate in peak seasons, and Masjid an-Nabawi is roughly 20 km or 20–30 minutes by road. The Haramain High-Speed Railway links Madinah, Jeddah and Makkah; its Madinah station is in the city, not the airport.

With the eSIM installed at home, the arrival routine is short: switch the line on after landing, set it as your data line, turn data roaming on for that line only, and give it a few minutes. Airport-by-airport detail is in the Jeddah Airport eSIM guide and the Madinah Airport eSIM: Get Online the Moment You Land for Umrah (2026).

Crowds, the group WhatsApp and battery

Ramadan and the December weeks put extraordinary demand on the networks around both Harams. Operators add capacity, but no provider can promise a signal for one phone in a crowd of that size, and a bigger allowance does not buy a faster connection. Plan for delay.

  • Agree a physical meeting point and time before entering the Haram, in case messages do not arrive.
  • Give each person, including children and older relatives, a paper card with the hotel address and the group leader's number.
  • Download offline map areas for Makkah, Madinah and the route between them.
  • Carry a power bank that complies with the airline's rules; a phone hunting for signal drains quickly.
  • Do not make one person's phone the group's only working data. Every handset needs its own plan.

One eSIM QR code is one device, so never share a code between phones. If you intend to hotspot a relative's phone, check the plan's tethering terms first. The family eSIM finder sizes a plan per person rather than per group.

How much data for ten to fourteen days

Pilgrim Typical data Usually the better call
Light use: Nusuk, messaging, occasional maps, hotel Wi-Fi in the evenings 3–5 GB Saudi Arabia eSIM, 5 GB over 30 days for $14.50
Regular use: daily navigation, translation, photos to the family group 5–10 GB 10 GB over 30 days for $23
Heavy use: video calls home every evening, unreliable hotel Wi-Fi 10–20 GB 20 GB over 30 days for $39
Group leader running bookings, transport and the chat for everyone 20 GB+ 20 GB, and turn off photo backup on mobile data

Prices are in US dollars at the time of writing; a UK card works normally and your bank handles the conversion. The 30-day validity covers a fortnight, and the allowance starts when the profile first connects in Saudi Arabia, not when you buy it. Our guide to how much eSIM data you actually need sizes it by activity.

Keeping your UK SIM for banking OTPs

A travel eSIM is data-only: no phone number, no ordinary voice or SMS. That suits this trip. Your UK SIM stays registered on the network for calls and texts, so banking codes, verification messages and calls from home keep arriving, while every byte of data runs over the Saudi eSIM. The one setting that matters is data roaming on the UK line: switch it off, and leave it off for the whole trip.

WhatsApp messages and the rest of your apps run over the eSIM's data like anything else. No eSIM seller can guarantee a particular calling or video app in any country, so test it on the first evening and keep an ordinary phone call as the fallback for anything urgent. Check what your UK network charges for receiving calls and texts abroad rather than assuming incoming is free.

Do this before you fly

Travel eSIM websites and apps are not reliably reachable from inside some Gulf markets, so this is a job for home Wi-Fi in the week before departure, not the arrivals hall.

  1. Confirm each phone is eSIM-capable and carrier-unlocked; older handsets often are not, and the 2026 compatible phones list settles it.
  2. Buy one plan per phone. The QR code arrives by email within minutes.
  3. Install each profile on Wi-Fi using the step-by-step install guide, and keep the QR code private.
  4. Label the lines "UK" and "Saudi data".
  5. Screenshot permits, the Nusuk Card, hotel bookings and the group leader's number.
  6. Leave the eSIM line off until you land; then enable it, set it as the data line, and turn data roaming on for that line only.
  7. Turn data roaming off on the UK line, and switch off photo backup and app updates on mobile data.

The honest reality

If you are travelling alone for three or four nights, your UK network's daily pass is fine and the effort of anything else isn't repaid. If your tour operator's package includes a Saudi SIM and the allowance suits you, use it.

For the trip most UK pilgrims actually take — a family, ten to fourteen days, a group chat that never stops and a video call home every night — rest-of-world roaming is priced per line and per day, and that arithmetic runs against you from the first morning. Ten minutes on the sofa with the QR codes is worth real money.

Frequently asked questions

Does my UK phone work in Saudi Arabia?

Yes, on roaming, provided roaming is enabled for the rest-of-world zone on your account. What it costs depends on whether your network sells a daily pass for Saudi Arabia or charges per megabyte; both are billed per line, per day. Check your network's app before you fly.

Which is better for Umrah, a Saudi SIM card or an eSIM?

A Saudi visitor SIM gives you a local number but means a passport, registration and an airport queue that grows with the season. A travel eSIM installed at home is working before passport control and keeps your UK number live for OTPs. For pilgrims who only need data, the eSIM is usually the better call.

Does Nusuk need mobile data?

In May 2026 the Ministry announced no-data-consumption access to Nusuk services in cooperation with Saudi telecom providers. It applies to Nusuk services only and should not be assumed to work identically on every roaming line or travel eSIM. Screenshot your permit and Nusuk Card so they open regardless.

Can I make WhatsApp calls from Saudi Arabia to the UK?

Your apps run over the eSIM's data like anything else, but no eSIM seller can guarantee a particular calling or video app in any country. Test it on your first evening, and keep an ordinary phone call on your UK SIM as the fallback for anything that cannot wait.

How much data do I need for two weeks of Umrah?

Five gigabytes covers light use with hotel Wi-Fi in the evenings. Ten suits daily navigation, translation and photo sharing. Twenty is for nightly video calls home or a group leader running everyone's bookings. More data does not improve coverage in the crowd.

Will I still receive my bank's one-time passcodes?

Yes. On a dual-SIM handset your UK SIM stays registered for calls and SMS while the eSIM carries the data, so verification codes keep arriving. Turn data roaming off on the UK line, and check what your network charges for receiving texts and calls abroad.

Should I buy the eSIM before leaving the UK?

Yes. Travel eSIM websites and apps are not reliably reachable from inside some Gulf markets, so buy and install on home Wi-Fi in the week before departure, one plan per phone. Leave the line switched off until you land and enable it in the arrivals hall.
